Choose the Right Format
The single biggest saving is ensuring your item is classified correctly. A large letter costs significantly less than a small parcel. If your item fits within the large letter dimensions (353mm × 250mm × 25mm, up to 750g), always post it as a large letter.
We weigh and measure at the counter — so if you're not sure, bring it in and we'll tell you the cheapest option before you commit.
Do You Really Need 1st Class?
1st Class aims for next working day delivery. 2nd Class aims for two to three working days. For most non-urgent items — birthday cards, returns, letters — 2nd Class is perfectly adequate and costs less.
If you're posting something time-sensitive, 1st Class or Tracked 24 is the right call. For everything else, 2nd Class saves money with minimal impact.
Use Stamps for Letters and Large Letters
For standard letters and large letters, buying stamps (1st or 2nd Class) and posting at the counter is the most cost-effective route. Online label printing adds a small fee that isn't worth it for everyday post.
We sell stamps individually or in books of 4, 6, or 12. Books of stamps are a practical way to have them ready for when you need them.
Avoid Underpaying — It Costs More in the End
If you underpay and the item is returned or surcharged, the recipient pays the underpaid amount plus a £1.50 handling fee. It works out more expensive than paying correctly in the first place — and it causes delays and frustration.
Compare Carriers for Parcels
For heavier parcels (over 2kg), it's worth comparing Royal Mail pricing with DPD or Evri options. We handle drop-offs for all three at our branches — so you can choose based on cost and delivery speed, then drop off in one visit.
Tracked for Items Over £20
If the item you're sending is worth more than £20, use a tracked service. The difference in price versus standard is small, but the peace of mind — and the ability to claim compensation — is significant.
No Appointment, No Pressure
Come in and tell us what you're sending, where it's going, and when it needs to arrive. We'll give you the options and the prices, and you decide. Visit our [branches page](/branches) for opening hours.
