Do You Always Need ID?
No — most everyday services at the Post Office don't require any ID at all. You can buy stamps, post parcels, pay bills, and top up your meter without showing identification.
However, certain services do require you to verify your identity before we can proceed.
Services That Require ID
Western Union and international money transfers - Valid photo ID is mandatory for every transaction - Accepted: UK passport, EEA/international passport, UK photocard driving licence, biometric residence permit (BRP) - The name on your ID must match the name you give us for the transfer
Currency exchange (travel money) - For amounts over a certain threshold (typically £500 or more), ID may be required under anti-money-laundering regulations - Bring photo ID for any larger currency transaction
Passport Check & Send - You don't need separate ID, but your existing passport is reviewed as part of the application
Driving licence renewal - Your current licence is the primary document
DBS and identity verification services - Specific documents will be required — the requesting organisation will tell you which ones
Certain bill payments and financial services - Some banking transactions may require your bank card plus a PIN
What Counts as Valid Photo ID?
The following are universally accepted across all our services: - UK, EU, or international passport - UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional) - Biometric residence permit (BRP) - National identity card (EU/EEA citizens)
What If You Don't Have Photo ID?
For Western Union and money transfers, photo ID is a legal requirement and cannot be waived. If you don't hold a passport or driving licence, a biometric residence permit is also accepted.
For other services, please speak to a member of staff — we'll do what we can to help and advise on alternatives.
Expired Documents
Expired passports and licences are not accepted as valid ID. If your document has expired, see our guide on [passport renewal](/guides/passport-renewal) or [driving licence renewal](/guides/driving-licence-vehicle-tax-renewal).
