What Is Western Union?
Western Union is one of the world's largest international money transfer services. From any of our branches, you can send money to family, friends, or businesses in over 200 countries — often available for collection within minutes at the other end.
It's one of the most popular services we offer, particularly for customers sending money to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, India, Ghana, Romania, and across Europe.
What You Need to Bring
- A valid form of photo ID — UK passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit
- The recipient's full name, exactly as it appears on their ID
- The country and city you are sending to
- The amount you want to send in pounds
- Cash or a debit card to make payment
You do not need a bank account to use Western Union — either to send or to receive. This makes it particularly useful for customers sending money to family members who are unbanked.
How Much Does It Cost?
Fees vary by destination, amount, and payment method. The total cost — including your transfer fee and the exchange rate applied — is shown clearly on screen before you confirm the transaction. You'll know exactly how much the recipient will receive before you commit.
As a general guide, fees for transfers up to £500 typically range from £5 to £15 depending on the destination corridor. Always confirm the final amount with the counter.
How the Recipient Collects
Once the transfer is confirmed, you'll receive a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). Share this code with the recipient — they'll need it along with their photo ID to collect the funds from any Western Union agent location in their country.
For some destinations, the money can be deposited directly to a bank account or mobile wallet. Ask us at the counter which options are available for your specific destination country.
How Long Does It Take?
In most cases the funds are available for collection within minutes of the transaction being confirmed. Bank account and mobile wallet deposits may take slightly longer depending on the country and the recipient's bank.
