International Posting Services
Royal Mail offers several international services. The right one depends on how quickly you need the item to arrive, whether you need tracking, and your budget.
International Standard - Estimated delivery: 3–5 working days to Europe, 5–7 days rest of world - No tracking once the item leaves the UK - Lowest cost option - Not suitable for anything valuable or time-sensitive
International Tracked - Full tracking from posting to delivery - Estimated delivery: 3–5 days Europe, 5–7 days rest of world - Includes compensation up to £50
International Tracked & Signed - Full tracking plus signature on delivery - Best option for documents, valuables, or anything the recipient needs to confirm - Includes compensation up to £50
International Signed - Signature on delivery, limited tracking - Mid-range option for important documents
Customs Declarations
Every parcel leaving the UK for a non-EU or non-UK-territory destination requires a customs declaration. This is a form describing the contents, their value, and their purpose (gift, sale, return, sample, etc.).
We complete this with you at the counter. Be accurate — customs authorities do open parcels and cross-check declared values. Undervaluing to reduce duty for the recipient can result in seizure or significant delays.
For EU destinations, customs declarations are also required following the UK's departure from the EU. Many customers are surprised by this — it now applies to countries like France, Spain, and Germany too.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
You cannot send: - Perfumes or aerosols (flammable goods) - Lithium batteries (loose or outside devices) - Fresh food or perishables - Medicines or prescription drugs (without proper documentation) - Sharp objects not safely packaged - Items prohibited in the destination country
Each country also has its own additional restrictions. Ask us at the counter if you're unsure about a specific item.
Packing for International Shipments
- Use a rigid box where possible
- Double-box fragile items — the parcel will be handled many times
- Seal all seams with strong packing tape
- Label clearly in English, and where helpful, in the local language
- Include the sender's return address on the outside
How Long Will It Take?
Delivery times vary significantly depending on the destination country's own postal and customs processes. EU destinations typically take 3–7 working days. South Asia and Africa can take 10–21 days for standard services. Tracked services are always faster and more reliable.
